- I wrote to the army - he was not a sergeant major in the 13th Hussars
- I could not find him in any census until summer 2011 - in the 1871 Scotland census.
- The census gave Benjamin Hagan, a private with the 13th Regiment at Preishill Barracks Edinburgh, born Ireland. From WO97 Chelsea Collection.(www.findmypast.co.uk) I have found that he was born at Tullycorbet near BallyBay, County Monaghan. When he enlisted to the 13th Regiment on 15th January 1866 when he gave his age as 18 years. His Service Record gives his next of kin in 1886 as mother Sarah Ann at Belfast, Antrim and brother John at Dublin Street, Monaghan, Londonderry. His father was not mentioned.
